His mother Annie Satterwhite Mays was an impressive field athlete. But their parents separated when he was young and he was primarily raised by his father.

Professional Career

1951-1971: He started his professional baseball career with Negro Leagues and Minor Leagues and made his MLB debut in 1951 with New York Giants and won NL Rookie of the year.

In 1952, he was drafted in the U.S.A Military during the Korean War, where Willie served as a P.E Instructor (Physical Education).

After returning in 1954, he led his team Giants to win in World Series and was rewarded as the NL MVP (Most Valuable Player).

1972-1973: He was traded to the New York Mets and in 1973, Willie played his last season, where the Mets did reach the World Series but couldn’t win and He retired when the season ended.

Second Marriage: In 1971, Willie got married again to Mae Louise Allen Mays who was a social worker and worked in child welfare. They did a lot of charity work but Mae passed away in 2013 because she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. They had no children of their own.

At the age of 93 years, He passed away on June 18, 2024 and as per the public media the main reason behind his death was heart failure. At that time, he was at a care home in Palo Alto, California.

His family and the San Francisco Giants announced that he “passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones.”
