Missy Franklin Early Life and Childhood

Missy Franklin was born on 10th of May in the year 1995 in Pasadena, California, USA, her father Richard Franklin used to be a senior executive in a medical device company. Missy’s mother D.A. (Diane) Franklin used to be a swimmer during her time in Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

At the age of five years old, Missy started her swimming journey at the Colorado Stars swim club and was coached under the guidance of Todd Schmitz. By the time she reached the age of twelve, she already qualified for 2008 U.S Olympic trials.

Education and the Beginning of Sports Career

Missy used to attend Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, which is a private school and among her schoolmates, she was known for her bright personality, humbleness, and faith.

She used to balance her studies and practice. Missy achieved a great forfeit of being a member of U.S. National Team at the mere age of fourteen.

Missy started her amateur career at a very young age, in 2011, at the age of sixteen she already achieved multiple medals at the World Aquatics Championships and made a name for herself.

Professional Career

  • 2010-2011: Missy made her debut at the 2010 FINA Short-Course Worlds after she joined the U.S. National Team, where she bagged a silver medal in 200m backstroke and 4×100 m medley against Team Britannica. In the year 2011, She participated at the World Aquatics Championships held in Shanghai, where Missy achieved three gold medals in 200m, 4×200 m freestyle and 4×100 m medley relay, silver medal in 4×100 m freestyle relay. In the same year, she took part in the Short-course World Cup held in Berlin, where she made two world records in 200m backstroke and 4×100 m medley relay.
  • 2012-2013: In 2012, Missy participated at the U.S. Olympic Trials, where she defeated Natalie Coughlin in the 100 m backstroke after which she got qualified for the London Olympics. There she achieved four gold medals in 100m and 200m backstroke, 4×200 m freestyle relay, 4×100 m medley relay after defeating players like Emily Seebohm, Aya Terakawa, Anastasia Zueva and many other.   • 2014-2016: In 2014, Missy suffered because of back and shoulder injuries because of it she had to take a short break from competitions. She made a comeback at NCAA Championship and took part in 200m freestyle and was the first women to make a drop at 1:40. In 2016, Missy suffered a lot of because of her injuries and panic attacks, in the same year, she took at the Rio Olympics but after reaching finals she used to lose but achieved a gold medal in 4×200 m freestyle.
  • 2017-2018: In 2017, Missy went through double shoulder surgery and did rehab but at the of 23 years old, Missy announced her retirement from sports because of injuries in December of 2018.
