Her childhood was spent in Oak Harbor, Washington. She grew along with her siblings and started wrestling at the age of 6 due to watching her brother compete in wrestling. She competed in boy’s category in an unorthodox way of combat sports.
She started with elementary school wrestling and by the age of 15, she she already won 2011 Cadet World Championships. Her childhood dreams were set to win Olympic Games when she was barely 4 years old.
Education and the Beginning of Sports Career
She was named the Mid-South Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Year and was a consistent winner of title NWCA Scholar All-American. Kayla was an outstanding student, graduating with B.Sc. in Mathematics maintaining a 3.95 GPA.
She also attained Bachelor’s in Sports Management with a focus on coaching. She is one of only four women in history to win four WCWA National Championships (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018).
Kayla followed her older brother, Shawn, into the wrestling. Her father initially told her she could start wrestling once she turned four.
Professional Career
She represented Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She faced rising star Adaugo Nwachukwu in a best-of-three series for the Senior World Team spot during 2025 Final X championship.
She currently trains with the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and has previously spent significant time training with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club in Iowa. Kayla has been a permanent fixture on the Senior National Team since 2019, consistently holding the rank 1st at 62 kg.

She is a multiple-time winner of Dave Schultz Memorial International Champion held in the U.S. (2016, 2018). She won Patricia Miranda Medal (2018) and USA Wrestling Women’s Wrestler of the Year (2021).
She collected her spot as the rank 1 wrestler in the U.S. by winning the Final X series in 2019, 2022, and 2023. She is also a Four-Time U.S. Open Champion. She won Silver Medals during 2021 and 2022 Senior World Championships.
