Early Life and Childhood

He was raised in the Towaco section of Montville and born into a wrestling family. McKenna joined Club Eclipse. He met coach Larry Levinstone who influenced McKenna. He always aspired to become a doctor however, his father inspired him to try wrestling.

He served as the team captain during junior years.

Education and the Beginning of Sports Career

He has been the NWCA Scholar All-American 3 times in the year 2017, 2018 and 2019. He attended Blair Academy which is a private boarding school known for high class wrestling program from where he graduated in 2014 after serving as a team captain.

During the times in Stanford University, he completed 89 units of undergraduate course in Management Science and Engineering. He earned Pac-12 All-Academic First Team Honors in 2017 during the time in Cardinal.

He started wrestling for the sake of personal development.

Professional Career

McKenna defeated Jesse Mendez during the U.S. Open Championship. He also almost Agustin Destribats however emerged as a 1st Runner. Joseph represented Team U.S.A. at the first UWW Ranking Series of the year.

He represented the Cowboy Regional Training Center under the guidance of David Taylor. He lost by a narrow gap 4-0 margin against Shamil Ibragimov.

Achievements/ Awards/ Medals

Muhamet Malo Ranking Series 2026 (25 February and 1 March 2026)

He defeated Nika Zakashvili from Georgia by a 7-0 score. McKenna showed a continuous tactic delivery through which he received a bronze medal. McKenna finished the tournament with a 3–1 record.

Zagreb Open Ranking Series 2026 (February 4–8, 2026)

He won the Bronze Medal at 65 kg during the 2026 Zagreb Open (February 4, 2026). He recently confirmed that he will be representing the United States at the Muhamet Malo Ranking Series in Tirana, Albania. He defeated Khamzat by 4-1 to get his spot in Semi Final of 2026 Zagreb Open.

He won Bronze Medal during the 2017 Under 23 World Championship and Silver Medal during 2014 Junior (U20) World Championship. He also won Gold Medal at Greco-Roman Championship 3 times (2010, 2011 and 2013).

He has been NCAA All-American recipient for 3 times and 2 times recognized as Big Ten Champion. McKenna received Gold during the 2018 and 2025 Pan American Championship. He became the Runner-up during the 2021 Olympic Team Trials.

He became the champion at the 2023 D.A. Kunaev International and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. During the high school days, McKenna evolved as 3 time recipient of Prep National Champion (2011, 2012, 2013). He also became 2 times Beast of the East Champion.

His parents are James and Natalie McKenna, who encouraged him to join wrestling. He is not married yet as per the records. His cousins- Steven is a 2 times NCAA Division III All-American wrestler at Johnson & Wales.       

His family resided in Towaco, New Jersey. His another cousin Allyson is a cheerleader who performed for the University of Maryland.

The Future Ambitions

He is willing forward to appear in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for Team U.S.A. at 65 kg weight category. His goal comprises of being in corporate leadership. Joseph is curious about construction industry since childhood days and currently looking towards future in commentary and broadcasting.

His goal is to join the World Senior Team for representing U.S.A. at the global level. He also have a desire to maintain a deep mental and physical health towards reaching the top spot in the team.

The Faith Journey

McKenna is a devout Christian. While he always believed in God, he initially viewed faith as something to turn to only during times of crisis or personal loss. His mother gave him Bible for 22nd birthday which led him to discover faith more deeply.
