Barry Sanders was born on June 16, 1968in Wichita, Kansas, USA. Barry’s father William Sanders was working as a carpenter and his mother Shirley Ann Sanders was a dedicated housewife. He grew up in a humble family and he had 10 siblings.

Ever since his childhood days Sanders has been interested in football. He went to North High School in Wichita, where he played as a defence and then switched to running back in his senior years.

Education and the Beginning of Sports Career

Even though Barry was talented because of his height (5’8), he wasn’t heavily recruited. He took admission in Oklahoma State University where he played as a backup for Thurman Thomas. In 1988, he won the Heisman Trophy which is awarded to the best player in college football and won the Maxwell award and Walter Camp award.

In 1989, he was drafted in Detroit Lions and signed a contract. He impressed everyone during his first game and later in the future with his hard work, humility and talent.

Professional Career

1989-1998: In 1989, due to NCAA sanctions against Oklahoma State, Barry Sanders became draft eligible for the NFL. The Detroit Lions drafted him third overall behind Troy Aikman and Tony Mandarich. Sanders initially was not draft eligible, but the NFL would later permit the drafting of juniors.

He was absent from training camp over a contract holdout but ultimately signed a five-year, $9.5 million contract with the Lions that contained a $2.1 million signing bonus. He gave some of that bonus to his church. Sanders was drafted because Lions coach Wayne Fontes felt he could be used to

make the team better. Sanders was set on making the Lions a success and indicated that he wanted to “restore the roar in the dome” following decades of struggle.

1999: In 1999, Barry shocked everyone by retiring at the peak of his career at the age of 31.
