Early Life and Childhood    

Helen grew up in Maryland where she learned the basics of wrestling with an aim for historic career. Helen didn’t initially choose wrestling for herself. At age seven, she stepped onto the mat simply because her younger brother, Tony, needed a drilling partner in his first year of wrestling. She fell in love with the sport immediately.

In 1999, her parents briefly asked her to quit because women’s wrestling was not yet an Olympic sport and they feared she would have no future in it. However, just two months later, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced women’s wrestling would be added to the program, and her parents allowed her to return.

Education and the Beginning of Sports Career

Helen attended Colonel Zadok Magruder High School for three years. She made history as the first female wrestler to place at the Maryland State Wrestling Championships as a freshman. She finished her time there with a standard record of 99–26, competing primarily against male opponents.

Helen moved to Marquette to join the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University. This move allowed her to finish high school while training in a full-time freestyle environment alongside world-class athletes.

Helen attended two universities known for their strong women’s wrestling programs during an era when the sport was still establishing itself at the college level.
