Even since he was five years old, he started boxing because of his father and grandfather, who were both boxers back in Mexico. Although he grew up in low-income family but through his training and hard work he started winning junior level competitions in boxing.

Oscar used to attend a local elementary and secondary school in his town in Los Angeles and later went to James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, California. During his high school time he became quite popular and known to everyone because of his boxing matches.

Oscar started his amateur boxing career at the age of fourteen in 1987 and won the Junior Olympic title and then on he started juggling between his studies and boxing career. Oscar used to practice twice a day in order to polish his skills and in 1992, he started his professional career.

Professional Career

1992-1995: Oscar made his professional debut on 23rd of November in 1992 and his first match was against Lamar Williams and won it. In the year 1993, Oscar fought five matches and won all of them against players like Troy Dorsey. In 1994, Oscar achieved his first world title after defeating Jimmi Bredahl and earning WBO Super Featherweight Champion and in 1995, Oscar fought many matches and after defeating Rafael Ruelas he achieved the WBO & IBF Lightweight Championship titles.

1996-1999: On 7th June in 1996, Oscar achieved the WBC Super Lightweight Championship title after his match with Julio César Chávez, a legend in the Mexican boxing industry. In the year 1997, Oscar defeated many players like Miguel Angel Gonzalez, David Kamau and Héctor Camacho and in 1998, which was one of his best years in which he won many fights against Wilfredo Rivera, Julio César Chávez II and Ike Quartey. On September 18 in 1999, Oscar lost the match in which Felix Trinidad unified WBC & IBF welterweight titles.

2000-2004: In 2000, Oscar won a match against Derrell Coley but during his match with Shane Mosley, Oscar lost the WBC Welterweight title because of split decision. In 2001, Oscar gained the WBC Light Middleweight Championship title after his match with Javier Castillejo on 23rd of June. After taking a gap in his career in 2002 because of his injury, Oscar returned in 2003 and had a fight with Shane Mosley II but lost the WBC & WBA Light Middleweight titles once again. 2005-2008: In 2005, Oscar once again took a break from boxing and returned in 2006 during his match with Ricardo Mayorga where he once again achieved the WBC Light Middleweight title. In 2008, after fighting and losing to Manny Pacquiao, Oscar decided to retire from professional boxing.
